01/09/2011 Thousands dressed in just their underwear set a world record at a protest run in Salt Lake City.

In a recent organised protest run set in Utah’s famous Salt Lake City, well over two thousand residents took to running through the city streets in response to the so called “uptight” laws imposed on the citizens of Utah.

Beating the previous record set by 1720 people there was a humorous overtone with everyone taking part in either their bras and knickers or underpants. Many took the opportunity to take advantage of the good weather conditions and a selection of protestors wearing masks of popular marvel comic characters including Batman and The Flash (no pun intended!).

This latest protest run shadowed the previous Guinness Book record set in Britain in 2010 by a long margin and has been a strong point of interest since the big day on September the 24^th. With a huge assortment of lingerie, underwear, swimwear and nightwear on display, the event made for entertaining viewing, whilst actively maintaining a controlled undertone of the real reason for the protest run.

There is a strong resentment at the minute towards the governors and officials of Utah, stating that a number of their laws are “antiquated” and “outlandishly out of date” fearing that a country wide shakeup and reform is needed to bring any states in line with each other. The event protested against Utah’s extremely conservative politics and was organised to try and get a message to many more residents that change has to happen.

With next year’s protest run planned for August 2012, many more are set to sign up after the success of this year’s great turnout, with organisers keen to get their message across to as many individuals, companies and organisations as possible. Kept within the boundaries of the best possible good taste, the protest run had a number of stipulations for those attending to adhere to and the one main rule was no nudity.

Whilst participants of all shapes and sizes took part in the run, organiser ‘Nate Porter’ was proud of the effort and determination of every single person attending and praised them, stating that the protest’s main core purpose was to “organise people who were frustrated by the strict and unyielding Conservative nature of the State of Utah’s politics.

Many taking part, wearing nothing more than their knickers, bras or boxer shorts added their supportive slogans for many causes that have been key points behind the protest run, reflecting the awkwardly conservative angle Utah has on such aspects as same sex marriages and gay relationships of any level. Many showed their support for such important points by daubing their slogans on their arms legs and chests.

With Salt Lake City being the home of the Mormon Church, the views towards gay marriage and same sex partners living together is heavily scorned but the principle reason for the run was to update the old and heavily sided views of many individuals to seeing their state laws change for the better.
